Pradhan Mantri Matritva Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is the renamed and modified version of Matritva Sahyog Yojana under which the government will provide Rs. 6000 financial assistance to pregnant and lactating mothers for the first live birth. Like many other welfare schemes of the central government, the government has also added “Prime Minister” to the name of this scheme.
The Union Cabinet has approved the new name Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) to make it more attractive. According to the Department of Women and Child Welfare, earlier the pregnancy assistance scheme was not so successful, even many people were not aware of it.
All pregnant women and lactating mothers who have had their first pregnancy on or after January 1, 2017 can avail the scheme subject to other eligibility criteria. The date and stage of pregnancy for the beneficiary will be calculated on the basis of the LMP date mentioned in the MCP card. In case of miscarriage of the first child, women can avail the remaining installments during their future pregnancy. However, a beneficiary is eligible to get the benefit of the scheme only once.
Pradhan Mantri Matritva Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) – Purpose
Although the Pregnancy Assistance Scheme will help pregnant women in many ways but the scheme has two main objectives:
- To provide partial compensation to working women against their wage loss and ensure their proper rest and nutrition.
- Improving the health of pregnant women and lactating mothers and reducing the impact of malnutrition through cash incentives.
Pradhan Mantri Matritva Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) which was earlier named as Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojana during the UPA regime has been renamed for the second time. This scheme will be implemented by the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
